Ferro Manganese

Ferro Manganese (FeMn) is an essential iron-manganese alloy, known for its high manganese content. It plays a critical role in steel production and foundry industries. FeMn is primarily used as a deoxidizing and desulfurizing agent in the steelmaking process, enhancing the hardness of steel while maintaining controlled silicon levels. This alloy helps improve the mechanical properties of steel, ensuring strength and durability.

We offer a range of Ferro Manganese grades, including High Carbon (HC FeMn), Low Carbon (LC FeMn), and Medium Carbon (MC FeMn), each tailored for specific applications in steel manufacturing.

Physical Properties:

  Appearance:

  • Colour: Typically silvery-grey or metallic in appearance.
  • Form: Supplied in lumps, granules, or powder form, depending on its application.
  • Surface: The surface may be rough due to the smelting process.

  Density:

  • The density of ferro manganese is typically around 6.5 to 7.5 g/cm³, depending on its exact composition and carbon content.

  Melting Point:

The melting point of ferro manganese varies based on the carbon content:

    • High Carbon Ferro Manganese: Around 1,260 – 1,350°C (2,300 – 2,460°F).
    • Low Carbon Ferro Manganese: Higher melting point, typically around 1,350 – 1,400°C (2,460 – 2,550°F).

  Hardness:

  • Brittle: Ferro manganese is quite brittle, especially in its high-carbon form. It tends to break easily when struck or subjected to mechanical forces.
  • Hardness: Varies depending on the grade, but generally ranges from 6-8 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively hard and brittle.

  Electrical Conductivity:

  • Ferro manganese is a poor conductor of electricity, similar to other ferroalloys due to its high iron content.

  Magnetic Properties:

  • Ferro manganese exhibits weak magnetic properties. The presence of manganese reduces the magnetic permeability of the alloy, especially in high-manganese compositions.

  Carbon Content:

  • Ferro manganese is categorized based on carbon content:
    • High Carbon Ferro Manganese (HC FeMn): Carbon content ranges from 6% to 8%.
    • Medium Carbon Ferro Manganese (MC FeMn): Carbon content is around 1.5% to 4%.
    • Low Carbon Ferro Manganese (LC FeMn): Carbon content is generally below 1.5%.

  Solubility:

  • Insoluble in water. It does not dissolve in water or organic solvents.

  Reactivity:

  • Ferro manganese is reactive with oxygen at high temperatures, leading to oxidation and slag formation during steel production.
  • Deoxidizing Properties: It is primarily used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking to remove oxygen impurities from molten steel.
