Silicon Manganese

Silicon Manganese (SiMn) is an alloy composed of iron, manganese, and silicon, produced through the smelting of slag from high-carbon ferro manganese at high temperatures. Both silicon and manganese act as deoxidizers, enhancing the toughness and hardness of steel. We offer various grades including High Carbon (HC SiMn), Medium Carbon (MC SiMn), Low Carbon (LC SiMn), and Extra Low Carbon (Extra LC SiMn) variants.

Physical Properties:-

  Appearance:

  • Colour: Typically silver-grey to dark grey.
  • Form: Supplied in lumps, granules, or powder depending on the application. The surface of silico manganese is rough and metallic.

  Density:

  • The density of silico manganese varies based on its composition but typically ranges between 6.0 – 6.2 g/cm³.

  Melting Point:

  • The melting point of silico manganese is generally between 1,350°C – 1,480°C (2,460°F – 2,700°F), depending on its specific manganese and silicon content.

  Hardness:

  • Silico manganese is relatively brittle and hard due to its composition.
  • Its hardness on the Mohs scale is estimated around 6-7, making it harder than pure iron or manganese.

  Electrical Conductivity:

  • Like other ferroalloys, silico manganese has poor electrical conductivity compared to pure metals.

  Magnetic Properties:

  • Silico manganese exhibits weak magnetic properties, especially when compared to other ferromagnetic materials like pure iron. The silicon and manganese content reduce its magnetic permeability.

  Carbon Content:

  • Silico manganese contains a moderate amount of carbon, generally around 2% to 3%. It varies depending on the grade (e.g., high carbon or low carbon silico manganese).

  Solubility:

  • Insoluble in water and organic solvents. Silico manganese does not dissolve in water or other liquids, remaining stable under normal environmental conditions.

  Reactivity:

  • Reactivity with Oxygen: Silico manganese is used as a deoxidizer in steel production. It reacts with oxygen in molten steel, removing impurities and preventing oxidation during the refining process.
  • Silicon and Manganese Content: Both silicon and manganese in the alloy act as strong deoxidizers, improving the quality of steel by removing oxygen and sulfur impurities.

  Thermal Conductivity:

  • Silico manganese has low thermal conductivity compared to pure metals like iron, due to its alloy composition.

  Brittleness:

  • Silico manganese is brittle in nature and can fracture easily under mechanical stress, especially in lump or granular form.
